about
Big Softy make danceable, off-kilter music that is both fun and challenges expectations.
The pair’s first offering is the warped disco track ‘Supercomputer’, which started life in the summer of 2020 as a joke drum part, but as soon as it was taken seriously turned into a grooving dance number. Bouncing basslines, pulsing arps and searing, angular guitars underpin Razzall's vocals, which satirically detail the rise of a villainous AI.
“I wanted to write from a different perspective, something un-human and cold, and that resulted in writing from the point of view of an AI,” explains Aidan of the unusual, Black Mirror-style subject matter, which would almost be funny if it wasn’t so close to reality. “I was reading about Roko’s Basilisk, a theory about an AI that could become so powerful it could retrospectively punish anyone that didn’t contribute to its existence.
“We tracked the verse vocals several times at different pitches to create that robotic vocoder effect, and added lots of little details in there, too; claps and distorted backing vocals that almost have a military command feel to them.”
He’s not wrong. After one listen to the repeated refrain of “All hail supercomputer!” you have no choice but to follow orders. All hail Big Softy.
lyrics
I wish to be injected intravenously into your bloodstream, into your bloodstream
Like a movie scene, I will live in perfect symmetry, travelling through subterranean grooves
I wish to be injected into the mainstream, into the Holocene, into the American dream
I wish to be rejected in my totality, in high fidelity, in my entirety
Where are you now?
Without your house, your car, your money!
Look at you now!
No house, no car, no money
We wish to see you in the lobby at three
We wish to reach a resolution where we mutually agree, into the mainstream, into the Holocene, into the American dream
(In line!)
Injected into the scene
You should have seen me at the merger!
Into the scene
I was hiring and firing like I never knew ya!
You should have seen me at the merger!
Into the scene
High, dry, and perspiring like I never knew ya!
Where are you now?
Without your house, your car, your money!
Look at you now!
No house, no car, no money
All hail supercomputer!
(Into the scene)
All hail supercomputer!
All hail supercomputer!
(Into the scene)
All hail supercomputer!
Getting harder, better, leaner, fitter!
Hast du ein feuerzeug bitte?
Harder, better, leaner, fitter!
Hast du ein feuerzeug bitte?
I will denounce all unbelievers!
I will denounce all unbelievers!
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
(Too right!)
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
(Where are you now?)
All hail supercomputer!
