about

‘Support Song’ fuses the melodrama of Talk Talk and The Blue Nile and the spacey guitar funk of Khruangbin with the duo’s trademark sinewy synthesis. Dig beneath the grooves, however, and there is a deeper melancholy at play on Big Softy’s most affecting three minutes to date.

“It’s a heartbreak song really,” explains singer Aidan Razzall. “It's about music being a crutch and a support during difficult periods, which is something I think most people can identify with. The long gang vocal build up section at the end is us at our poppiest and most cathartic. It was really fun to make a big sad pop track, or at least our idea of pop music, with all the musical bells and whistles that, as Big Softy, we can't resist adding in, like arpeggiated synths, percussion and samples.

“This is a song where we are wearing our hearts very much on our sleeves. It’s a sad banger for those who need to get lost in music.”

‘Support Song’ follows the duo’s well-received debut ‘Supercomputer’ & their most recent effort ‘The Big Man', which was released in January. These early singles saw the band win over fans including Tom Robinson at BBC Radio 6 Music, Emily Pilbeam at BBC Introducing, John Kennedy at Radio X, plus Frankie Francis & Shell Zenner among others at Amazing Radio, ending up on the station’s A-list and C-list respectively. They were also name-checked in Pitchfork’s review of the Yard Act album review and have turned up on a number of influential playlists, including Sub Pop Suggests.

Big Softy are Tom Orrell & Aidan Razzall. They have worked alongside each other on several different projects over the years in various capacities, but once they started to make demos together, they quickly racked up hundreds of ideas, loops and sketches which eventually formed the songs for Big Softy.

They cite Underworld and LCD Soundsystem as influences, but also have a strong, hyper-real visual identity. “We’re both pretty awkward,” explains Razzall. “So, it’s a way of expressing the sound of the music visually, rather than focusing on us as people.”

lyrics

Hear me! My address to music:
From the back of an ambulance,
In a crisis of confidence.

Hear me! My address to music:
From the back of a cab:
‘I owe you man’.

As the needle enters my arm,
It’s therapeutic.
As the water reaches my heart -
I’ll face the music.
As the needle enters my arm,
It’s therapeutic.
As the water reaches my heart…

Another day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.
A day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.

Gotta one way ticket to the south of France.
(I suggest you lose it.)
On a one-way ticket, I don’t stand no chance.
(I told you man.)
Gotta one way ticket to the bottom of the gutter.
(Why don’t you prove it?)
On a one-way ticket to an unknown future.
(I told you man.)

A day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.
A day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.

(Since you left me, I have been lost in music,
Since you left me out on my own.
Since you left me, in time to face the music,
Since you left me out on my own.)

And It’s true that I reclaim you!
And it’s true that I reclaim you!
And it’s true that I reclaim you!
And it’s true that I reclaim you!

Another day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.
A day in the life of me,
You and I, you and I.
